Women’s safety is one of the most discussed issues

Women’s safety is one of the most discussed issues in India.

Every incident brings the same reactions:
More rules.
More restrictions.
More “precautions.”
But look closely —
Who are these rules really for?

“Don’t go out late.”
“Don’t wear this.”
“Don’t travel alone.”
“Share your live location.”

The intention is protection.
But the impact?

Restriction.

Because over time, safety stops being about
making spaces safer
and starts becoming about
making women more careful.

And that shift changes everything.

It limits movement.
It limits opportunity.
It limits independence.

A job opportunity across the city becomes “too far.”
Late working hours become “unsafe.”
Travel becomes conditional.

So while the world expands,
women’s access to it quietly shrinks.

This is where the conversation needs to change.

Because real safety is not:
Teaching women how to avoid risk.

It is:
Reducing the risk itself.
Better infrastructure.
Safer public transport.
Stronger law enforcement.
Accountability for perpetrators — not instructions for women.

At NaariSamata, this distinction is critical.
Women don’t need to be told how to exist safely.
They need systems that allow them to exist freely.

💜Because safety should not come at the cost of freedom.
So the real question is:
Are we building safer spaces…
or just smaller worlds for women?

There’s something deeply human about being able to

There’s something deeply human about being able to take care of yourself.

And something equally difficult about not having access to the most basic essentials to do that.

Last winter, 231 dignity kits reached over 200 women across London — through shelters, foodbanks and day centres — offering not just hygiene products, but a small sense of comfort, normalcy and dignity.

This work is only possible because of the people behind it.

The volunteers who show up.
The partners who stay committed.
The communities that choose to care.

A quiet but powerful reminder — when we come together, we can make sure no woman is left without the basics she deserves.

As we move into 2026, the intention remains the same: to reach more women, more consistently, with care that respects their dignity.
